An Incredible and Atrocious FIR by the Nandigram Police at the Behest of CPIM!!!

Regarding: ARREST of a Krishak Committee organiser in NANDIGRAM and a Queer FIR against him that includes names of de-facto all the senior leaders of SSC & KC, editors of their journals, and even the name of a well-known septuagenarian cultural activist (a retired staff of Central Library, Jadavpur University, and now recuperating from a severe attack of Pneumonia) and a founder member of GANABISHAN — [Ms. Dr.] Jolly Bagchi!

Quite recently, precisely in the wee hours of 12th Feb '08, our comrade Mithu Ghosh, an activist of Shramik Sangram Committee (SSC) and an organiser of Krishak Committee (KC) , a resident of JHARGRAM, was arrested from SONACHURA village of NANDIGRAM for allegedly inciting the people there with ‘ Maoist Propaganda (!) '. He is in jail custody now and booked under sections 120, 121, 153 etc of IPC. His host there at Sonachura, a veteran ex-CPIM leader and now a BUPC grassroot organiser Mr. Sudhanshu Das and his son were also arrested later under the same case , they too are in Jail, since several people of Sonachura had started protesting the arrest of Mithu, whom they knew well and knew that he was not at all a Maoist as alleged by the police.

The arrested comrade Mithu has been visiting Nandigram regularly since the outburst of peoples' struggle there and always trying to carry the message of SSC/KC to the fighting people there, the main point of his campaign being that the working people should take the control over their own fights and own organisations themselves . The SSC and/or KC never had any relations whatsoever with the CPI (Maoists). The literatures accompanying Mithu were regular publications of these organisations (like SANDHIKSHAN, being published since 1972; SRAMIK ISTAHAAR, being published since 1974 and KRISHAK PATH, being published since 1978, and For A Proletarian Party, being published irregularly since early 1990s ) and some other printed materials; though the Police added spuriously in the seizure list some more things to foster their allegations, e.g. some alleged Maoist literatures-posters etc. The incredible FIR contains the names of Founder-Editors & Co-Editors of all the abovementioned magazines, moreover, names of de-facto almost all the senior leaders of our organisations, and even contains the name of Founder of the cultural group GANABISHAN, Jolly Bagchi (misspelt in the FIR as Dolly Bagchi, but her address was correctly given there) who, almost all of them, never visited NANDIGRAM at all!

The arrest of Mithu from Nandigram and implicating almost all the senior most leaders of SSC and KC in the same FIR/report, simply reveals an ominous trend that the ruling class and the govt are hell bent in suppressing any form of real opposition to the policy of globalisation-liberalisation and the spontaneously awakening struggle of workers and peasants, conveniently in the name of Maoists.

Workers, poor & toiling peasants, rural labourers in many places already started protest demonstrations against this arbitrary action of the government.

We appeal you to raise your voices against arbitrary state tyranny denying basic democratic rights, harassment, etc with fictitious cum atrocious allegations by taking appropriate actions whatever you think fit, because in related issues you are keen agitators.
