Translation of a Leaflet

You are aware from media coverage that a long-time SSC activist and presently an organiser comrade of Krishak Committee, a Jhargram resident, comrade Mithu Ghosh was arrested by police in the wee hours of last Monday from Nandigram. Police has put false allegation against Mithu that he is a Maoist leader and putting false cases against him they have kept him in custody.

Many of the Nandigram people strugling against land grab, many of the poor toiling people there, know comrade Mithu, because comrade mithu has been going there almost from the begining of the Nandigram Struggle and spreading the words of Krishak Committee there. He has become almost a family member to several persons there. From the house of one such senior organiser police arrested comrade Mithu putting a false label of 'Maoist' on him. Even that senior organiser and ex-CPIM member Sudhanshu Babu of Sonachura village of Nandigram could not escape police atrocity while trying to save Mithu from arrest. Then the police put false charges against Mithu and kept him in their custody.

As a long-time resident of Jhargram, comrade Mithu is well known there. He is well known there among the factory workers and Raliway workers, in the factory gates and workers' colonies, as a Shramik Sangram Committee activist. Since last few years he has been working for building up Krishak Committee organisation in several villages in the Jhargram Sub Division. Those who are acquinted with Shramik Sngram Committee and Krishak Committee know well that these two organisations are in no way connected to the Maoists; views of these organisations are totally different from that of the Maoists. When the police arrested Mithu they got several copies of recent issues of Shramik Istahaar and Krishak Path — organs of Shramik Sangram Committee and Krishak Committee respectively. Police could have read those materials! The main views being propagated by SSC and KC at present is that: There is no Revolutionary Communist Party in the true sense now; the workers and peasants should not rely on any party, rather they should build up their own fights and prganisations independent ly, and should keep control over their own fights and organisations. This very view is being explained in different perspectives through those papers. And Mithu has been trying to propagate this idea among the struggling people of Nandigram for a year.

What the CPIM is thinking? Why they are resisting the propagation of this viewpoint in Nandigram? What is their real motive? Do they want to install a dictatorial regime by curtailing the basic right of speech and right of forming orgaisation of the people? We would like to tell them: By false cases, by police harassment and state terror... etc they cannot curb the rising tendency seen among the workers and toiling peasants to rise up and fight independently.

We are demanding immediate unconditional release of comrade Mithu. And we are appealing all the workers and peasants and democratic people to raise their voices against the illegal detention and police harassment of comrade Mithu. Raise your voices — Government cannot gag the people by unleashing police terror! You cannot resist the independent forward march of people.
